More common than you might think
One in ten men will experience pelvic health symptoms during their lifetime, and more than 50% of men over 50 have sexual function issues. These problems can develop at any age, and men can find it very difficult to get help and treatment.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include problems with:
- Bladder: leaking with urgency, leaking when coughing, sneezing or exercising, dribbling after going to the toilet or throughout the day, and difficulty emptying the bladder.
- Bowel: accidental leakage of faeces or wind, loose stools, difficulty emptying the bowels, a feeling of incomplete emptying, and constipation.
- Sexual function: erectile dysfunction (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or reduced quality of erection and sensation), premature ejaculation and painful ejaculation.
- Persistent pelvic pain: in the lower back, buttocks, tailbone, groin, abdomen, penis or scrotum, for example chronic prostatitis or pudendal neuralgia.
After prostate surgery
Prostate surgery is a common cause of bladder leakage and erectile dysfunction in men, and up to 70% of men have urinary incontinence afterwards. Pelvic floor rehabilitation and education can help reduce bladder problems following this surgery.
Your assessment
No internal examination
Our physiotherapist won’t carry out an internal examination. Instead, they can use transperineal ultrasound to assess your pelvic floor and anal sphincter control.
